Basildon's Senior relay teams each won medals at the county road relay championships at Melbourne Park on Sunday.
The women won gold by a huge margin over high flying Benfleet RC and Southend AC, though they didn't take the lead until the second leg of three. Kirsty Tydeman led off for us with a strong 22:20 but was up against Benfleet's Charlotte Peppiatt, the second fastest woman on the day. She handed over to Stacey Ward who put us into a commanding lead with the fastest time of the day, 20:14. Our third leg runner, Karen Goode, increased this lead with her 22:58 to give the team an overall time of 65:32, over four minutes ahead of her nearest rivals.
Charmaine Wheeler ran the first leg of our incomplete B team in 24:46.
Our men were defending champions but were up against a very strong Southend squad. Jon Briggs showed his form is recovering after a long injury lay off with fourth place in 19:11. He handed over to Gareth Riddell who gained two places in 20:00. Our third leg runner, under 20 Grant Webb conceded one position in 19:40, being overtaken by Ryan Prout who ran the day's second fastest time. But once Mark Sanford started the fourth leg, we all knew we stood a chance of silver if he could overhaul the Chelmsford athlete who had started a few metres ahead of him. He duly did this with a time of 18:37, to earn team silver in 77:28.
Chris James (21:20) and Stephen Strange (21:09) ran the first two stages in an incomplete B team.
